Wedr esday, Sept 5, 2001 5C Record, Reporter A World For Kids ' Oroville. It was taken from the Plumas National, which was later changed to The Feather Bulletin, from its Aug. 3, 1878, edition: THE STAGE ROBBERY - On Thursday of last week the Quincy and Oroville stage was stopped between g is the actualBuckeye and Peavine, by infamous / one man, and the / robbery of the driver forced to give : ......... " up the express box. The par- ticulars, as we get them, are about as follows: The stage was decending the hill this side of Peavine, when sud- denly a man with a mask over his face jumped into the road, turning the lead-horses up the hill and of course stop- ping the stage. He then brought his shot-gun to bear on Charley Seevy, the driver, and ,ordered him to "throw out the box." Seevy obeyed with-out hesitating, and as soon as he gave up the box he was ordered to drive on. The passengers were not molest- ed. The box, we are told, con- tained $413.50 and a $200 dia- mond ring. Several letters were also in the box, a num- ber of which contained checks. These however, will be useless to the robbers as pay-ment has been stopped. A close search has been made for the box since the robbery, but without avail, the coun- try in the neighborhood be- ing rough and brushy just the place for a road-agent to be successful. These chaps take good care not to commence operation when the messen- ger is on board, and probably it shows that they are pos- sessed of .good judgment. START ! lI~, ill The Ballad of Jesse James Jesse James was a lad that killed many a man, He robbed the Danville train, He stole from the rich and he gave to the poor, He d a hand and a heart and a brain. CHORUS: Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn __ for his life, Y Three children, they were brave But the dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid Jesse James in his : grave. It was Robert Ford, that dirty ; little coward, I wonder how he does feel, For he ate of Jegse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed, -- Then he laid poor Jesse in his grave. Jesse was a man, a friend to the poor, He'd never see a man suffer pain, And with his brother Frank, he robbed the Chicago bank, And stopped the Glendale train. It was on a Wednesday night and the moon was shining bright, They robbed the Glendale train, And the people they did say for many miles away, It was robbed by Frank and Jesse James. It was his brother Frank that robbed the Gallatin bank, And carried the money from the town: It was in this very place that they had a little race, For they shot Captain Sheets to the ground. They went to the crossing not very far from there, And there they did the same; With the agent on his knees, he delivered up the keys To the outlaws, Frank and Jesse James. It was on Saturday night and Jesse was at home Talking with his family brave, Robert Ford came along like a thief in the night And laid poor Jesse in his grave. It was one of the gang called little Ford, He shot poor Jesse on the sly. The people held their breath when they heard of Jesse's death, And wondered how he ever came to die. Robert Jesse went to rest with his hand on his breast, The devil wilt be upon his knee. He was born one day in the county of Clay, And he came from a solitary race. This song was made by Billy Gashade As soon as the news did arrive; He said there was no man with the law in his hand Who could take Jesse James when alive.
