Page s Wednesday, SepL 5, 2001 By Shannon Morrow Sports Editor The Chester High School football team looks to improve on its 2-8 record from last season with the addi- tion of several talented players. Junior Josh Pettigrew rushed for over 1,200 yards on the junior varsity team last season, so should be a big factor in Chester's offense this year. Ryon Baxter, another junior up from last year's JV team, will be the quarterback. "He throws the ball really well--he's a really accurate passer," said coach Terry Hernandez of Baxter. "He's a good athlete with pret- ty quick feet, and he makes good deci- sions." Juniors Jason Francis and Jeremiah Farinella are both good receivers that Baxter can throw to, added Hernandez. Another strong addition is Matt Maumoynier, a senior who attended Lassen High School last year to wres- tle. Playing fullback, Maumoynier is "a heck of a football player," said Hernandez. With only three returning seniors, most of this year's varsity team was on last year's junior varsity team. "The JV team played really well (last season)," said Hernandez. "They beat people pretty handily." Another im ovement over last year is Chester's IBl th. With plenty of backups, the Volcandes have at least one replacement at every position. "We're not near as vulnerable to injury as we were last season," said Hernandez. our kids can play two or three positions." Chester faces several challenging opponents early in the season. Hernandez said that if his team can play well in the first half of their games this season, they will be very competitive.
