8C Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter f I m Greg Knight Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com When school ended last year no one thought there would be a girls' soccer program at Quincy High School since the team had seemingly lost a head coach and stipend funding for the 2015 school year. And then athletic director Mike Woodlee rode to the rescue by not only retaining coach Sarah Goard, but spurring enough interest among the Trojan student athletes to field a team. And field a team, Quincy did. In the first game of the year, the Lady Trojans hosted the Portola Lady Tigers last Wednesday, Sept 2. The battle between the two teams was fierce and, at the final whistles, the score was tied 1-1. The Trojans managed to draw first blood, with senior student-athlete -- and National Merit Scholar-- Jennifer Mathes making a zipper of a goal at just past midfield, courtesy of an assist from freshman phenom Jazzmyn O'Bryant. "It went right through some Portola defenders, it was a beautiful shot," Goard said after the game. Bryant, an aggressive defensive player in her first year at Quincy High School, received a yellow card late in the game after colliding into -- and having words with-- Portola team captain Tabitha Martinez. After the game, Bryant said she was pushing her hardest all 90 minutes and didn't mind the tag by game officials. "It was a tough game and we had a lot of pressure from (Portola) but we muscled through it and the good part is we didn't lose," O'Bryant said. "Coming in as a freshman, the coaches have been helping me improve on my game in areas where I need to get better. They do that with all of us so that is a big reason why we did well today. They've also helped me improve on keeping my mouth shut, which is why I got the card in this game." With Quincy leading 1-0, the Lady Tigers answered back in the second half with a brilliant solo goal from Mikayla Quesenberry to even it up at one each. The rest of the game was a defensive stalemate, though Martinez said the tie wasn't surprising given so many new faces in purple jerseys. "The Quincy team is very good and we have a lot of new players who are working to fred their spot on the team," Martinez said. "We're going to get better as the season goes on." One of those new faces is senior Destiny Weaver, who splits her time athletically between the soccer team and varsity cheer squad. Weaver said that she manages her time well in order to take part in both activities. "I split practices with both teams, so I will go to the first hour of soccer and then follow that with an hour at cheer practice," Weaver said. "It's my first year playing soccer, but it's a lot of fun." The Trojans will host Chester today starting at 4 p.m. and the Tigers will host Chester Sept. 17. Portola's senior team captain Tabitha Martinez goes up last week. Mathes scored the only goal for Quincy in the against Quincy senior Jennifer Mathes 1-1 tie.
