Described as the ultimate in permaculture garden beds, Hugelkultur is a way to recycle and garden using biomass: logs, branches, twigs, leaves, pine needles and any other forest litter that most people burn or haul off. Also described as mound' gardens, Hugelkultur beds are popular in Eastern Europe and Germany. Avalanche Ranch, on the north side of Indian Valley, farms the dry plains of the valley. Participants can learnabout gardening teclniqes, irrigation solutions, rotational grazing, landscaping and general homesteading on the valley floor. The ranch is home to a menagerie of farm animals that help support the family, the gardens and the pastures of the farm. The hosts will offer a variety of homemade products to sample as participants enjoy the spectacular views of the valley. After lunch, the tour will visit the gardens at Greenville High School and Indian Valley Elementary School. The well-established high school garden has been growing for several years, while the elementary school garden sprouted just this year. Both are educational gardens that will support each other over time. Planners hope the new elementary school garden will be as bountiful as its sister garden at Quincy Elementary School.
