2A Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 Newest officer Jeff Engle attaches a pin to daughter Jaymie Crews during her swearing-in ceremony at the Plumas County courthouse Sept. 10. The mother of three is the county's newest correctional officer and will leave for a six-week training academy at the end of the month. Crews' mother, Jennifer, looks on as youngest son Josh peeks up. Sheriff Greg Hagwood, right, said he is hiring local residents, such as Crews, who was born and raised in Eastern Plumas, because "they have families, they love it here, and they want to stay. It's worked out very well." Photo b Debra Moore out KQNY s new logo as well as ! inuing radioprograrnsJ I the Sound of the Lost Sierra I BIF and may be s tr_eamed on the web at I www, kqny919,0rg. The college adopted the book and incorporated it into many courses. "We have 10 professors working on it," Trutna said. But it's his hope that it will be a communitywide project and the college is planning activities focused on the book, including showing the movie version. "We would like to adopt a book every year and next year be involved with PUSD (the school district)," Trutna said. Board Chairman Jon Kennedy supported the concept, but expressed trepidation about encouraging residents to read a book that neither he nor his fellow supervisors had read. The resolution they were being asked to adopt read in part: "Now, Therefore, be it resolved, that the Plumas County Board of Supervisors hereby recognize 'The Book Thief by Markus Zusak as the Book in Common for 2014-15 and urge all citizens to read, reflect, and take action in support of the common good of the community." "Maybe next year we can read it first and weigh in," Kennedy said. He added, "I'm going to trust that it's a good book." The supervisors adopted the resolution and each received a copy to read. Four copies of the book are available at the Plumas County Library. nee Fall Special *Change Oil & Filter (up to 5 qts) *General Visual Inspection & Lube *Brake Check (without wheel pull) *Cooling/Antifreeze System Check *Battery Check (A $80.00 VALUE) 213 Danny El Good though September 30, 2014 *plus tax & haz mat fee *does not apply to diesels, full sized vans or synthetic fluids
