The key thing is that there is a good fit between what the adoptive family is looking for and with the behavioral and physical characteristics of the rescue animal they are considering. Much of what we will cover will relates more to a dog adoption. Recently, we have been working with a professional trainer to improve the process by providing adopters with ex- pectations for the rescue ani- mal they are about to adopt. There is about a two-week , "honeymoon" period where the new animal is settling in and the adoptive family is ex- cited about their new family member. As the animal settles in and becomes comfortable with the new environment, its true behavior will emerge. Studies have been done on reveal the top two reasons "why rescue dogs are returned initially:" being housebreak- ing issues and destructive behavior such as chewing or digging. Nipping/biting is a close third and may indicate a need for better socialization to deal with a fear issue. It is very important that anyone considering adopting a rescue dog have a clear under- standing of what they may have to deal with. It is also important to have resources available to successfully deal with these issues. At High Sierra Animal Rescue, we focus on doing a thorough follow-up with each and every adoption. We typi- cally follow up after one day, one week and one month. Then, as needed and as long as it takes, we follow up to help No MORE HOMELESS PETS HIGH SIERRA ANIMAL RESCUE the new dog to be successful. We are also planning to add a follow-up letter at the end of the two-week period (the "hon- eymoon" period) to reiterate is- sues that may arise and re- quest the adopter call High Sierra Animal Rescue with an update, especially if they are experiencing some difficulty with the new dog. In some instances, this will require a professional trainer new owner's responsibility to help the animal to be success- ful in its new home.
