121ii Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter LETTERS. ,ore page 11B "The IMF uses these tactics on most countries including ours: Woodbridge represented a project completely out of scale with the region. It tromped in, with local political support, without regard for the local residents' real estate values. The stakeholders with their "city building" double visions would have created "city" in the country, all in the name of development. I'm glad they failed. They'll fail again. Be concerned the next time you hear the term sustainable and or development. Question whether it is a short-term money bag for the "stakeholders" or whether it is really a necessary and complimentary addition to your area. It is likely not and becomes a financial ball and chain for your community. Robert MUne Clio Successful blood drive Eastern Plumas Health Care is pleased to report that a successful Community Blood Drive was held last week in Portola. The generous turnout kept the staff of United Blood Services busy from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Just under half the donors had scheduled appointments, with the remainder presenting as walk-ins. United Blood Services provided a wide array of drinks and snacks for donors following their procedures. The Drive, a joint effort of Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary and United Blood Services, has been a bi-annual event in Portola for many years. The Auxiliary extends thanks to all who donated. We encourage donors to return in 2015 as there always is a need for blood and blood products. Katie Tanner EPHC Auxiliary Food bank Here I am, no more again. We have just gotten word that Monday, Sept. 22, was the last food give away program. Supposedly there are no funds to continue the program. Seeing as it comes out of the Nevada food bank, does this mean Portola and Quincy get left out also? My, my, how tough it is to live in Chester for old people on low income. F. J. Morgan Chester Cut supervisors' pay In 2013, E1 Dorado County supervisors slashed elected administrative staff salaries as much as 24 percent to match their peers' salaries; because the county was having hard times financially. Can we expect the same from our part-time supervisors? Our part-time Plumas County supervisors are overpaid compared to a similarly populated county. Inyo County supervisors are truly full-time supervisors and they make similar salaries as Plumas County supervisors. If you compare current salaries plus full-time hours (a 40-hour work week) Inyo supervisors do not hold any other job other than county supervisor. Our supervisors maintain their professional vocations in most cases. With wages and benefits, the highest-paid part-time supervisor is Lori Simpson, receiving $76,965. Kevin Goss, (pharmacy worker) makes $69,186 and Terrell Swafford (machine shop owner) makes $66,692, Jon Kennedy (car sales in Sonoma) $60,276, and Sharon Thrall (realtor) $55,471.14. Additionally, the longer you are on the Plumas Board of Supervisors the more you make in benefits and salary. , I contacted several counties to compare supervisor salaries across the state. I based my comparisons on similar populations to Plumas County. Enhancement pay (longevity) allows supervisors in this county to prosper when times are bad. That in itself is a poor message to county employees and citizens. Among other regional counties, Sacramento, Yolo, Nevada, and Amador counties don't offer "longevity pay enhancement" for elected officials; Plumas does. A reduction in pay to supervisors of 25 percent pe r supervisor would surely help the county and could fully fund LAFCO each year. This would help bail out our special districts. Just looking for honest solutions to current funding issues. Trent Saxton Lake Davis Blessed A community with a heart is like a parachute, a parachute won't work until it's open, and from my experiences within our local communities, our communities' parachutes are alive and well. I have had the honor to be involved with two fund-raisers: one for Karen Helmick, Pizza at the Branch, and Heathers Stephens at Lake Almanor Propane and hundreds of local and out-of-towners have proven my point of the parachute theory, it just won't work until it's open. So many have opened their hearts for persons they have never met or know of why, because they care and in these smaller counties when one hurts we all hurt. We are blessed to live in our county and there is no better place to raise a family and enjoy the goodness of our communities and the people that make up this county. Granted we pay more for utilities, gas and food. It's a small price for what we have, being able to drink the water, breathe the air and not wonder what's in it. So a few pennies more for peace of mind. A very small price to pay to live in this heart- felt part of Northern California: Those that live in the metro areas think we are crazy to live up here in the wilderness. But they pay a price also. Just wanted to say thank you to all that make this slice of heaven, and thank you to all the merchants and people who have opened their hearts to those in need. If you ever get the opportunity to bless someone take the challenge and you too will be blessed and that's a promise. Richard King Lake Almanor Half-empty This back and forth seems a little pointless, like arguing whether the glass is half-empty or half-full. At least the letter writer from Portola admits that our actions sometimes wreak havoc, but gives our government the benefit of the doubt due to "good intentions". I give them no such benefit of the doubt. My wife has given me grief over a statement I made in my last letter about the government lying about everything. Never say never or everything, right? So they don't lie about everything, but they unquestionably lie a lot. That gives them little credibility even when they are telling the truth. Jeff Ludvigson Quincy When is he leaving? You have to give Jon Kennedy credit. Unlike many baby-kissing politicians, he will shut you up, slam your doors and close your windows. Remember Laugh Co? "Sit down and be quiet, you're just a troublemaking handful." He knows. And now he tells our supervisor he hasn't "got time for this B.S." He knows. I know that Jon is intelligent; he and one or two others have told us that. Maybe his upbringing and forceful studies didn't allow time for a job description of the position of supervisor. Supervisor Terry Swofford made a suggestion based on his contact with his district's constituents. They share a deep concern about the movement to separate from the zoo that has become California. I am, if I may use street vernacular like John did, pissed off at his "I ain't got time for that B. S." remark. But then, he knows. I have just one question for Mr. Kennedy: When is he leaving? Does he know? Ed Laurie Portola Disgusting opinion My view of one Portola writer's opinions isn't distorted. It's easy to recognize a person who's been sucked in by FoxNews, and other outlets of the ignorance fostered by right-wing "one-percenters,', the only ones who benefit i from Reaganomics and i related policies. (Yes, it's all, about money.) Defend against what? Being black? Anyone who thinks the President is failing to help the inner cities is, well, ignorant. , The current comprehensive immigration' plan will significantly boost i our economy. As for why i we haven't had any job training and infrastructure spending (millions of jobs), or many other economic programs torpedoed by Republican obstructionism, see above. It's called a petition, not a demand. "Why try t o make friends with and appease those whol would kill us?" So they , won't kill us? So they'll ' stand aside while we kill , others before killing them, too, with our typical betrayals of convenience? Where are the president and his family are vacationing overseas? All I ever hear about are Hawaii and Martha's Vineyard. Maybe, instead, the writer refers to some "goodwill tour"? I think calling the president a king and a criminal is either libelous hyperbole or hyperbolic libel, I'm not sure which. Very popular in certain media outlets (see above.) Only one person is directly responsible for the Benghazi tragedy. Ambassador Stevens. He traveled to Benghazi, knowing full well what the dangers were. His criminal, stupidity cost at least four ' people their lives. Nearly all African-Americans have significant "white" ancestry. Many "white" Americans whose ancestors have lived here for generations have African heritage- ', ......, i I submit that the character of this writer reflects poorl on us all. The subtle and ' not-so-subtle racism embedded within the whole l right-wing gestalt by the writer's information sources can't help but shine through. It's all embarrassing, disgusting, and a little bit terrifying.
