A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, Cashier's Check drawn on By Victoria Metcalf Staff Writer A handful of change, $1s, $5s, $10s and personal cheeks were dropped into boots members of three local emer- gency departments carried Tuesday, Sept. 25. Members of the Quincy and Meadow Valley fire depart- ments and Plumas District Hospital's ambulance crew spent two hours gathering funds. By the evening's end, vol- unteers collected $7,100, and more is still coming in, ac- cording to Chief Andy Ander- son. By the morning of Thurs- day, Sept. 27, another $400 in donations, including a check for $260, was added to the kit- ty. By that afternoon, the fund was less than $200 away from totaling $10,000. All funds raised from an evening's worth of work are earmarked for the orphans and widows of firefighters killed in New York City's ter- rorist attacks two weeks ear- lier. Before the drive began, An- derson said the department had already realized $1,200 in donations. The largest single contribu- tion made that day was $200, Anderson said. One of the more unusual contributions was a gallon container of pennies, Ander- son said, as he began to count them out and roll them up. Staking out strategic street corners and parking lots at Say-Mot, the post office and Safeway, ,olunteers silently appealed for assistance for members who had fallen in the line of duty. Sites were al- so established in Meadow Valley. In their words When more than 300 mem- bers of New York City's fire departments were killed in the line of duty, it touched many people, but none more than other firefighters. "Obviously it was emotion- al," said six-year Quincy Fire Department veteran Richard Stockton."
