He adds that he is very proud to call him- self a Quincy Volunteer firefighter, knowing that they can make a difference as a team or as individuals and encourages anyone who thinks they might be interested in joining their "family" to come check it out. "Being a firefighter these days does not mean you just stick to fighting fires. We respond to about any type of call you can think of," he said. The extensive training Captain Schmid has both received and given over the years supports his comment. He is certified from the Quincy Fire Academy, has training including low angle rope rescue operations, bus extrications and Hazmat operations. He is also a certified state fire-training instructor. Chief Robbie Cassou said David is a huge asset to the Quincy Volunteer Fire Department. "His comment to everything he does is awe inspiring, as evidenced by being named the department's 2o13 Firefighter of the Year. As a captain on Engine 8122, he always maintains his equipment in excellent condition. David is one of our best instructors teaching at our fire academy, our Tuesday night drills and instructing for other departments. He is always well prepared, organized and an enthusiastic teacher. He is instrumental in helping coordinate our child outreach programs and even helps keep our computers working, said Chief Cassou.
