Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2_~10 9A k NEWSMAKER Donald Fosburg, uncle of Melody Zernich of Quincy, stands on the deck of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor with the 16-inch guns above him Sept. 2, 2010. Fosburg was a crewmember onboard the Missouri Sept. 2, 1945; he and others left in the crew were invited back for a spe- cial 65th anniversary recogni- tion ceremony. ' Fosburg said when the sur- render was signed it was his 19th birthday and obviously 65 years later, he turned 84 on the decks of the "Big Mo." Fosburg laughingly quipped that the "Big Mo" weathered those years a little better than himself and the rest of the crewmembers that were aboard. Fosburg also said when the surrender was signed he was not actually standing on deck watching but instead was at his post as radioman and sent many of the messages around the world that the surrender had been signed. Fosburg volunteerecl for the Navy in World War II when he was 17, and his first assign- ment was to the Missouri, which being the pride of the fleet was a plum assignment for him. He spent all of World War II and thereafter on the "Big Mo" until he was dis- "charged in 1947. He kept a scrapbook of his adventures during the war and thereafter and even has the radi0man's copy of the message sent in 1945 regarding the signing of the surrender. He also had a message marked "Top Secret" regard- ing dropping of the atom bomb which ordered all of the ships in the Navy to stand 600 miles offshore, which was a curiosity to everyone since the atom bomb was such a big secret. After the bomb was dropped and his ship was no- tified he was well aware of why they were told to wait 600 miles offshore. Fosburg intends to donate his scrapbook and other mem- orabilia from the Missouri and World V~ II to the ship so it will Pema~in as a re- minder to all who come after him of his service as well as Donald the troops that served in World War II. Fosburg and his Missouri crewmen were also received on the USS Arizona Memorial for a special ceremony. Fosburg said being on the Arizona Memorial and seeing all those names of the fellow servicemen that never came back from World War II was quite humbling. Fosburg is seen in the pho- tograph holding a copy of the Whittier Dailey News which has been his hometown since World War II. He finished col- lege on the GI Bill and then owned an insurance agency and retired a few years ago.
