Invariably, most of them had at least one or two things they were displeased with. In many cases the patients didn't think there was anything that could be done to achieve their dream smile. You should know that because of many recent advances in dental technology, a whole new field of dentistry has evolved. This new emphasis is known as cosmetic dentistry. The cosmetic dentist under- stands that this discipline requires artistic ability as well as technical expertise and scientific knowledge. It is very important that thetreatments or restorations achieve a lifelike and natural appearance. New technology now allows the cosmetic den- tist to place restorations that are indistin- guishable from natural tooth structure upon casual observation. Some of the new procedures that are now available to you are home bleaching and in-office bleaching (to lighten dark or stained teeth), cosmetic "bonding" using composite resin, all-ceramic crowns and veneers, microabrasion (to remove white or brown spots from teeth), and cosmetic gum surgery (to even out contours). Orthodontics could even be considered cosmetic dentistry. SIERRA PHYSICAL THERAPY Providing the finest physical therapy and related services since 1989. Call 1.800-WIC-4093 When the bonding technique was first invented in the sixties, there was only one type and one shade of composite resin. Now there are many shades of composite so an exact match can be achieved. This one technique alone has revolutionized modern dentistry. Fractured edges can be repaired with composite resin and in many cases a crown can be avoided. Spaces or gaps between teeth can be closed using "bonding" often without drilling or shots. Many people want their old silver fillings replaced with composite or ceramic inlays which makes all their fillings "disappear". In short, it is possi- ble to have all restorations in your mouth tooth colored for the best cosmetic appearance. If you would like to maximize your smile's potential, ask your dentist about the possibilities. You may be pleasantly surprised at the answer. Gregory L. Sawyer, D.D.S. CHRISTOPHER W. NDERSON, D.C.
