lOB Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 Bulletin, Progressive, li helicopter By Victoria Metcalf Staff Writer She was from Vermont and Boston, and when an emer- gency helicopter flew over- head, she tipped her head up- ward toward the California skies to watch it pass. She couldn't believe what she was seeing--a helicopter preparing to land in a rural area to fly a patient to a larg- er facility. Even accustomed as she was to the ski hills of Ver- mont, the 20-year-old was amazed that such medical service could exist. "What a good idea," she ex- claimed. "Why doesn't every place have this?" At least four emergency he- licopter services are avail- able to meet patient needs in Plumas County. Chosen by a location's needs, dispatch direction and physician requests, most of their pilots are accustomed to flying night or day to transport accident victims or m servl special care patients to larger facilities. To residents in rural Cali- fprnia, it's a way of life. Care Flight One of those services is Care Flight, of Reno. Tradi- tionally serving eastern Plumas County, the Seneca area, and reaching remote ar- eas around Quincy, the ser- vice is celebrating its 20th anniversary. "Since bringing emergency medical helicopter trans- portation for northern Neva- da and California 20 years ago, REMSA's Care Flight program continues to thrive as {he region's busiest emer- gency medical air service in one of the nation's fastest growing populations," said John Morrison, director of Care Flight of the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA). "Even though we do it every day, our work never becomes routine," he said celebrates Inside a Care Might helicopter, it's bulance and ER service. "We work under adverse cir- cumstances in remote loca- tions, at accident scenes, in pastures and on mountain tops. We are called upon to treat the most physically and emotionally devastated hu- man beings Our goal is al- ways the same--to meet the needs of the patient and get a combimlti t am- them to an emergency room." The region's need for air ambulance service to trans- port the critically ill and in- jured was raised nearly 20 years ago by Washoe Medical Center and Saint Mary's Re- gional Medical Center, both in Reno. Plumas District Hospital i paramedic Steve Tolen was a member of the board of direc- tors who helped launch Care Flight. It's a good service, he said, and serves in some of the remotest areas. At the time of Care Flight's organization, the region's population wouldn't support more than one helicopter, Morrison explained. By 1985, REMSA was awarded the franchise for ground and helicopter air ambulances for Washoe County and within five years, REMSA became a to- tally self-sufficient, private, nonprofit organization. Two yea?s ago, a second he- licopter was added to the pro- gram. The organization now has a MDg00 Explorer and a Twin Star. The MDg00 is a twin engine helicopter with the capacity to handle-two patients, Mor- rison said. Describing the the "latest and the market, he tail rotor and the placed higher to make rescues those working in i ty.
