Photo by Shannon Morrow FRC men's soccer beats Lassen again After digging into a bit of a hole, the Feather River Col- lege men's soccer team knew that they must win every re- maining conference contest in order to stand a chance of representing the Golden Val- ley Conference at the state tournament. The Golden Eagles took their first step toward that goal Oct. 19 by beating con- ference leaders Lassen Col- lege 2-1 in Susanville. The match was a hard fought midfield battle. FRC showed an advantage in the first haft by outshooting the Lassen Cougars 3-1, but at hafftime the match was still knotted at 0-0. The second half started badly for the Golden Eagles, when center midfielder Os- car Gonzales made a hard tackle and was ejected from the match in the 50th minute, so FRC had to play the re- maining 40 minutes a man down. Fortunately for the Eagles, six minutes after the ejec- tion, FRC's leading scorer Juan Garcia drove down the left wing and lofted a high shot toward the back post. The Cougars keeper tracked the ball and tried in vain to collect the shot, but fumbled it into the net, giv- ing FRC a 1-0 lead. In the 78th minute, the Golden Eagles scored what would end up being the match winner. Alex Reyes, who leads the team with five assists, crossed the ball into the box from the right flank, and Jose Martinez was there to collect it. Martinez chested the ball and fired it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, Lassen caught FRC still in a celebra- tory mood and struck for a consolation goal when Eagles keeper Tony Wakeford called for the ball but couldn't col- lect it. Five overtimes The Quincy High School football team went to five overtimes in Esparto last Friday before losing 66-60. The teams traded touch- downs the entire night, bringing the score to 34-34 at the end of regulation. In overtime periods, each team gets the ball 10 yards from the end zone and gets four downs. Cameron Diaz Deleon and Alex Easley each carried in three touch- downs for Quincy. Keyshon Johnson caught two touch- down passes, and Devonte Smith rushed for one touchdown. The loss moved Quincy's overall record to 6-2. Tigers win Portola's Mario Rodriguez caught two touchdowns in the first quarter of last Friday night's game against Co- lusa. The Tigers won 49-6.
