Encouraged with open-ended questions, each team reconsidered its strategy after failure and made adjustments. Ultimately, success opened the door to the next level, the ropes course. Team members had to define a good leader -- someone who is nice; does the right thing; takes charge but knows how to step back; has communi- cation skills; works well with others; is tenacious, persevering and patient. With that, teachers took students onto the ropes, a course of increasingly difficult tasks each team worked its way through by exhibiting the leadership qualities the team mem- bers themselves identified. Teachers selected appropriate chal- lenges from the more than 25 rope and cable obstacles at Grizzly Creek Ranch designed to promote group cooperation and devel- op individual leadership skills.
