Kathleen Williams, County Clerk By: Sue Cliff, Deputy Published: FRB, IVR, PR, CP Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, 2010 Men's soccer wins two The Feather River College men's soccer team took re- venge on the Shasta College Knights with a 4-2 victory Tuesday, Oct. 26. Shasta was one of only two teams to defeat the Golden Eagles in conference play. The FRC men have scored four goals in each of their last two matches and are preparing to finish confer- ence play Nov. 5, at home against Butte College. The Golden Eagles' first goal against Shasta came in the ninth minute, when sophomore sensation Juan Garcia drove down the right wing and cut the ball back to his left foot. Garcia drove a cross to the far post, where Cesar Vasquez rushed on to the ball and headed it home for his sec- ond goal of the season. Just one minute later, Garcia provided another as- sist. This time, Garcia found Ismael Reyes, who hammered home a shot from 15 yards out to make the score 2-0 with only 10 minutes off the clock. It was Vasquez's turn to play provider in the 17th minute, when he fed Reyes a crisp pass to his feet, and Reyes did not hesitate to slot the ball, from 22 yards out, into the upper right corner of the goal. Finally, 12 minutes before the half, Garcia stripped the ball from a Knights' defend- er and hit a laser shot from almost 30 yards out that dipped and swerved its way into the upper corner of the Knights' goal. In the second half of the match, FRC took its foot off the gas, and Shasta got two consolation goals. FRC's preseason goal was to win conference and make the state playoffs. They needed help from College of the Redwoods to make that happen. Lassen, which leads con- ference by two points, visit- ed Redwoods Tuesday, Nov. 2. FRC needed Redwoods to beat or tie Lassen. The re- sults of the match were not known at press time. In addition, the Golden Eagles need to beat or tie Butte for FRC to be crowned conference champions for the second year in a row. "We dug ourselves a bit of a hole on the road against Shasta and Butte earlier in the season by losing to both," said FRC coach Don Williams. "Now we need a little help from Redwoods against Lassen. "It will be sad if we do not win conference, because we swept Lassen in conference play, and we know we are the best team in the confer- ence." FRC 4, Redwoods 0 Four days earlier, Oct. 22, FRC bested College of the Redwoods 4-0 in a confer- ence match. It only took six minutes for the Golden Eagles to get on the scoreboard, when freshman winger Alex Reyes crossed the ball from the right flank into the box, connecting with fellow freshman Makenzi Lukas, who scored his third goal of the season. Fourteen minutes after the first goal, Lukas was brought down in the penalty box, and Pedro Salazar con- verted the penalty kick for goal number two. With one goal and one as- sist, Lukas was not finished wreaking havoc on the Cor- sair defense. The combina- tion of Reyes and Lukas came together again, two minutes after the Salazar goal, on a play nearly identi- cal to the first goal. With 22 minutes gone in the match, the Eagles led the Corsairs 3-0. The second half saw the Golden Eagles strike once more, when Salazar took a free kick from 22 yards out. The Corsair keeper fumbled the ball, and Jose Martinez was in the right place at the right time to clean up the loose ball for FRC's fourth goal of the day. This was Martinez's second goal of the season. Golden Eagles goalkeep- ers Anthony Wakeford and Jose Felipe split time be- tween the posts and com- bined for the shutout. Juniors shoot in championship The Quincy Sport Shoot- ing Association held its Rocky Mountain Elk Foun- dation Junior Club Champi- onships Saturday, Oct. 30. Nine shooters braved the cold and rain and participat- ed in the trap shooting event. Eric Wolfe won first place and captured the prestigious Lawson Award. Jacob Hurst took second place and Ruben Halbritter took third place. The junior trap team's newest shooter, rookie Zack Jensen, excited the crowd by shooting a 7-of-25 with a Remingon 11-87 youth model on his llth birthday. The QSSA Junior Trap Team expressed its thanks to the Feather River Chapter Rocky Mountain Elk Foun- dation for their continuous support. For more information, or to purchase tickets to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foun- dation Banquet at the fair- grounds Nov. 6, call Jim Lid- berg at 283-3587 or Matt Cul- ver at 283-4606.
