• 2C Wednesday, Nov, 12, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter . ° • !! Greg Knight Sports Writer sports@plumasnews.com For the 2014-15 Feather River College Golden Eagles men's basketball team, the concept of youth, vigor and perseverance might be the calling card of the season• If so, that youth and energy started the Golden Eagles out on the right foot Monday, Nov. 3, as the FRC squad bested the Simpson University Red Hawks junior varsity team at home on a 97-48 final score. Although the Golden Eagles ended with a 4-20 overall record and a 1-9 record in the Golden Valley Conference last year, the hopes for a winning 2014-15 season are being pinned on a group of freshmen that includes Jarrell Tate, Nick Longmire, Namuji Madoshi, Derrek Gordon and Quincy native Ty Morrison. In the season-opening game against Simpson, the Golden Eagles looked like they were on fire in the first half as Tate scored 14 of his 22 points on the night and fellow underclassman Deshawn Pughsley was a perfect four-for-four from beyond the arc. Madoshi was also lit up like a neon light in the first as he sank a trio of deuces and made a trey from far beyond • the line. • Offensively, FRC took advantage of a soft defense from Simpson in the first 20 minutes -- a sorely lacking defensive set that allowed Morrison to get outside on a number of occasions and to finally toss up a boomer of a three-point play. It wasn't only the freshmen making things happen on the court for FRC, however, as sophomore Marcus Harden, a native of Compton in Los • Angeles County, put up all of • his nine points in the first half before taking over as a defensive firebrand in the second half. Fellow Compton native Kevlin Swint was also an in-your-face player on the defensive side, taking four fouls and adding two points of his own in the latter 20 minutes. Leading 58-20 at the half wasn't good enough, though, for head coach Randy Rick, *° Feather River College's Nick Longmire forward Brent Boudreaux for a score season at home.
