There is a rumor, out-and-about the Basin, spoken in hushed tones, some- times barely a whisper. Through the trees, 36 miles around the lake and near the river and creek, in the town of Chester, folks are seeing the same strange thing, almost like a vision, so fleet that you have to blink, furrow your brow, and scratch your head. What was that? Too big for a deer, too small for an elk. Too much like a deer to be a bear or slinky cougar. And oh, the antlers! One would almost swear there were ... about. Doubters are those who.dare not believe their eyes and are nay-sayers to those brave enough to whisper what they have seen. But the children of the Basin know. Young kids, two and three years old just blurt it out, "Look, Mommy!" The children four and five years old, are being told their imaginations are way too big. Kids six to eight years old are getting their TV privileges suspended. Older youths, nine and up are keeping lrtMs green quiet. Yet, there are big folks, true to their inner child, rising up, quietly, mind you, and with the true spirit of the Lake Almanor Basin are responding to a need; as Basin residents always do, with hard work and a giving heart. Green and white candy canes are appearing throughout the Basin; like secret landmarks. The canes are about 18-24 inches high, sometime 36 inches or more high; constructed of wood, cardboard, paper or whatever materi- als on hand; firmly planted in the ground by a tree, nailed to a fence post, next to a store door or any other secret or obvious place; you just have to look and believe. Attached to the candy canes are lunch-size, brown paper bags, rolled down at the top and half-filled with granola type crunehies, munchies or maybe just some oatmeal. "What's this all about?' visitors are asking, "These green and white candy cane posts look like wildlife fast food stops." The doubters are answering, "Dun't know," and walking away, heads down with brows all wrinkled. None but the brave or whimsical of heart are likely to give a straight answer. You see, as a responsible newspaper publication, it is our responsibility to let our public know the facts. The word is out that Santa's reindeer are spending the late fall and early Photo by Ch~i and white cane spotted near the Lassen Resort at Lake Almanor. Basi ! dents are not explaining rious canes and accom lunch bags that are over the Lake Almanor Basi winter season right here in the Ole St. Nick has picked forests of Collins Pine, the shorelines of Lake Ahnanor, and Chester area rivers and streams year's training camp to get the into top-notch shape. This tireless crew of high-fliers sprints, leaps, takeoffs, aroun the Basin. Now we all know why some roadside orange and tion signs around Lake red noses! Drive carefully for Santa's reindeer dashing acrOSS and leaping over the roadways. So, that said, forget the whis rumors, don't feel shy right up. No need to hide that and white candy cane reindeer ing post. Feel free to express your love of Christmas, the spirit of the time, your heart, sing out-loud, of man and creature abound.
