6B Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Spontaneous act grows into something more Sometimes a spontaneous act can have longer-range consequences. Sometimes a spontaneous act can become a labor of love or commitment that beckons to keep one busy for weeks, months and possibly years. Possibly this act could even qualify one for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. It was a beautiful Monday. I was on vacation. On an impulse a friend and I decided to hang some Tibetan flags between the trees on his land. The idea of these flags is that the wind continually blows them until they fray. Each thread that blows away in the breeze sends a prayer out to humanity. A nice thought, I felt. After hanging the flags we started to move some rocks J COMMUNITY GREEN PAMELA NOEL around, defining a potential garden space in front of the house. Not a bad design. But then we noticed some piles of raw materials nearby. One pile consisted of some sod or turf grass that had been removed from a garden and dumped here. The other was soft. As I seem to be preoccupied with the concept of Hugelkultur these days, I suggested that we build one in order to defme the garden strip he was wanting to make. This growing mound takes advantage of otherwise wasted and rotting biomass to make growing garden beds. So, our simple act of hanging some flags be.came a longer project. We combed his yard and surrounding forest, looking for downed trees and other biomass that could become the foundation for this hugel or growing mound. He had moldy boards in a pile that had degraded over years of neglect. We dragged these over to the spot. Continuing to clear out his yard we found downed trees and branches that would probably end up rotting or being burned. They were dragged to the pile, which was now 35 feet long. Next we attacked the pile of sod pieces, though it felt like the pile attacked us. Sod is heavy. We defmitely had our upper-body workouts planned for the day. These pieces of sod were placed upside down on the degrading wood. Next we shoveled close to 60 wheel barrows full of soil onto the growing hugel. Next, my friend decided to extend the hugel another 30 feet. So, more decaying wood was found, sod moved, and soil. This was fast expanding to a 65-foot hugel. Thus ended the day. We were tired and sore, and needed to Emd a hot tub in which to soak. We did. Next day we went at it again. This time, more soil, and then the planting begun. Spring bulbs daffodils, paper whites, and narcissus were planted, buried in the hugel. Then, 30 plants of foxglove were added. Finally, we seeded the empty spots with New Zealand clover so that it might emerge looking like a giant green worm winding its way around the parking area. After all was planted, we watered it well.., so it would stay damp until the rains came, predicted for two days later. A few days later we were at it again, adding materials for 20 - 30 more feet. This time, we drove back into some logged areas to imd extremely rotted wood. The more rotten the wood, the faster the hugel will succeed at being the sponge to irrigate the plants during summer. Also, the more rotten the wood and other debris the less nitrogen it will take away from the growing plants. In cases in and more which the wood is newly cut, it is good to add some nitrogen-based material such as grass clippings or plant some leguminous plants (beans) that will feed the soft. I would not be surprised if this hugel grows to 100 or more feet before it is finished. It could become the non-ending hugel project that will encircle the property, defining an ever-changing landscape. At the least it is a great way to grow plants on top of rocky soft, without a constant water source a great alternative in this time of drought and challenging climate change conditions. Perhaps it will grow to be a hugel mound that will be eligible for the Guinness Book of World Records, grown right here in Plumas County.
