Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Nov. 20, 201-3 9A Veteran's organization collecting Christmas gifts for the troops M. Kate West Staff Writer The Feather River Blue Star Moms are again hosting their Christmas Care Package drive for the troops between now and Dec. 4 for Chester and Dec. 11 for Quincy. "Gifts may be dropped off at Plumas Bank in both Chester and Quincy," president Ann Cordero said Nov. 15. Items especially needed include snack foods such as boxes or packages of individually wrapped crackers, granola bars, drink mixes, jerky, protein bars, trail mix, instant oatmeal, instant soup cups, Top Ramen, tuna kits and canned fruit. Also suitable for shipping are canned foods such as ravioli or chili. Cordero said those items should be in non-plastic containers with pull-tabs. "We maintain a list of care package items favored by the troops. They include socks, foot powder, washcloths, baby wipes, saline nasal spray and hand and foot warmers," she said. Cordero did issue a caution and requests that donations of personal hygiene products be brand name and not the type of products found in hotels. "Some troops have allergies and need name brand toiletries that list all the ingredients. And, just as important, we want to send them reminders of home and items they miss," she added. In the past the chapter has invited gift activities such as games, books and magazines as donations, as well as money to help defray the cost of shipping. This year the Blue Stars are reaching higher and have included new items on their donation list. Two new wish list The Feather River Blue Star Moms are currently hosting a special drive to gather donations for Christmas packages for the troops. Plan ahead and take donations to either the Chester or Quincy branch of Plumas Bank. Photo by M. Kate West items are iTunes gift cards and Playstation 3 video games. "Hard-to-find items such as computer wipes and canned computer air are also greatly welcomed by the troops. Last, but certainly not least, the troops always appreciate receiving letters of support from the folks back home," Cordero said. The Feather River Blue Star Morns will be hosting Christmas care package parties Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Chester Memorial Hall and Thursday, Dec. 12, in Quincy in the Masonic Hall. All community members are invited to stop in and help pack care packages for the troops.
