Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014 11A Superheroes of Kindness Kindergartners do good deeds When Quincy kindergarten teacher Arlene Stahlman stumbled upon a blog written by a teacher in Missoula, Montana, she took interest. The blog is titled "Superheroes of Kindness" and details the good deeds the students in Missoula do around their community. The idea behind the blog was to show that children can do little and sometimes big deeds to help individuals or groups of people in their community. According to Stahlman, the point is one can make a difference no matter how small he or she is. Stahlman, always looking for new ways to teach her students, decided to implement the idea in her own classroom. This year, Quincy has a whole new league of superheroes in town. "We began this year talking about kind deeds the children did either at home or at school, then we began talking about kind deeds the students saw others do," said Stahlman. "Now we are ready to share our kind deeds with the community." Stahlman's class started practicing good deeds in the classroom. The students constructed items to help beautify the room and practiced being kind to each other. For their first bigger act of kindness, the students decided to stage a special show for Stahlman's 90-year-old father, Art Poma. When she was a child, Stahlman performed a Polynesian dance called "Te Manu Pukarua" for her father. A couple weeks ago, the students performed the same dance, bringing back memories for Poma. Arlene Stahlman and her kindergarten class at the Pioneer Elementary School campus gather around Stahlman's father, Art Poma, after performing a Polynesian dance called "Te Manu Pukarua" for him. The class is practicing doing good deeds for others this year, calling themselves the Superheroes of Kindness.
