Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014 13A State Superintendent Tom Torlakson visited QESI On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction TomTorlakson visited Quincy Elementary School• At the invitation of Superintendent Miglis, QES was one of two schools chosen in Plumas County for this visit. We wel:e selected because of, our Distinguished School Award. While he was here, he toured our campus with a focus on Place Based Learning by Rob Wade and an all school assembly and photo op. It was a wonderful opportunity to show off our school, as well as advocate for the unique needs of QES and our rural schools• Book drive for QES Library at Epilog, going on now Through a partnership with Epilog Books in Quincy, we are having a bookdrive to keep our library up to date on current books for our students• Requested books have been preselected for you to purchase at a 20% discount.Thank you for not only supporting our school, but supporting a local businessas well! Order your yearbook today! Make sure to get your yearbook order form in to have this keepsake of the 2014-2015 school year. Yearbooks are now $23 if ordered by 12/19 and prices will go up after that. Also, we don't order extras, so don't wait until the end ofthe year- get your order in now. Evacuation This week, our Kindergartners were evacuated from the Pioneer campus due to a propane spill on Highway 70. One thing we learned was that when we sent out our automated caller, for some it went to their home number and they did not receive the call. Each family can customize the numbers the system calls and I highly encourage you to do this: • Update your School Messenger preferences: log onto our homepage (, click on Parents, then cun/ent parents, then "School Messenger Parent Log." Next, click on "sign up now." Please call the school office if you need assistance. You can configure the system to call multiple numbers including cell phones, home phones, text and email notifications. In an emergency, this is one of the fastest ways for the school to get accurate and updated information to you. Please set your account preferences to the number/s you are most likely to receive during the day. Nine-year-old Faith Oswald knows all about unconditional love: she's a major animal lover. The poster contest is part of HSAR's humane education program. Certified volunteers bring the RedRover Readers curriculum to every third-grade classroom in the Plumas Unified School District. Through a five-session course, students read and discuss books about being responsible citizens. Topics include everything from caring for their families' animal companions to taking action in preventing animal suffering. "Teaching students to have empathy for other beings is essential to raising kind, compassionate citizens," said Lori Lotts, HSAR marketing and development manager. Every child who participatesin the program receives a "It's Cool to be Kind" bracelet• Oswald's poster is featured on the HSAR website and Facebook page, as well as in the local newspaper• For more information, visit Faith Oswald spends time with her beloved pets at home.
