Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 7C ul Brian Taylor Lassen Sports Editor Jbtaylor@iassen news.cqm These past few weeks I have been hiking and walk- ing on some of Susanville's most well-used trails and pathways. This week I felt it was time for an off-trail ad- venture. I was interested in explor- ing the Bass Hill area, so I started out by visiting the California Fish and Game public map database at the following web address, http://bios.dfg.ca.gov. The Biogeographic Infor- mation and Observation Sys- tem Web site offers topo- graphic maps of California and allows its users to pin- point latitude and longitude coordinates. I chose an interesting des- tination and plugged the co- ordinates into my GPS. I was headed for Charlie Spring located on Bald Mountain. The easiest access point was from Byer's Pass Road. To get to there from Su- sanville, take a left on Coun- ty Road A3 from Highway 395, turn left on Sunnyside Road, and make your first right Onto Byer's Pass Road. You will be heading north on a dirt road through the pass between Bass Hill and Bald Mountain. Once you turn on to Byer's Pass Road, you travel for ap- proximately 1.9 miles until you reach the first true park- ing area on your right. It is accessible by most vehicles, Since there is late season archery hunting still in effect for Bass Hill, I wore bright colors to distinguish myself as a human. There is a track road that you can drive on past the gate, but I was anxious to start hiking and commenced my hike right from the park- ing area. The track road leads north- east through a mix of sage and bitterbrush and provides a nice easy slope to warm up stiffmuscles. I had my Gps unit in hand, so I had a good idea of the direction I needed to be heading. Right away I saw two mule deer, a mother and fawn for- aging in the bitterbrush. They became aware of my presence and bounded into the distance. Two black- billed magpies then flew past. I haven't seen these birds on my previous hikes. It seems they prefer the wide- open spaces of the high desert. Further up the trail I caught a glimpse of what ap- peared to be a sharp-shinned hawk. I was unable to get a positive identification before the bird flew behind a draw. After hiking for .4 miles the double track turns into a single track and at this point you are left to follow game trails. I skirted Bald Mountain, getting into some steeper ter- rain and slowly navigated up a game trail, into a slight ravine. This drainage was in the shadow of Bald Mountain and with frost still on the ground, I found it a bit chilly. The GPS was indicating that the spring was close by, located up a steep embank- ment to my left approximate- ly .15 miles away. I looked up the hill to see a bright green water trough situated behind a clump of wooly mullein. I started up the slope and , noticed a small ground squir- rel running uphill following a long black line of volcanic rocks. This line pointed me towards the spring. Once I reached the spring I was surprised to see that there was water still trick- ling into the trough. The wa- ter was delivered via a long pipe coming out of the hill- side. I noticed fresh deer tracks all around in the moistened soil. Wooly mullein is a tall flowering plant that resem- bled a handful of tall spears jutting out of the disturbed soil. At around seven feet tall, they were definitely ben- ef'lting from the trickle of the trough. The views from this van- tage point were amazing. I saw a massive group of snow geese taking a rest from their migratory journey on Leavitt Lake. The Sierra Nevada's sprawled out to the south of me and I was able to see the snow capped peak of Mt. Lassen on the horizon to the west. I stayed near the spring for a moment to snap a few pho- tos and eat some trail mix. I headed due south, side hilling my way into a saddle ~ where evidence of past cattle grazing was abundant. Salt licks and old cow'pies abound. From there I slowly de- scended Bald Mountain and found my way back to the truck. Round trip the hike took me two hours and with a variety of terrain, it provided a great workout. The views were stunning all around, and it was a great way to get a bird- like view of our local area.
