Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 9A College interns learn career ski00lls Laura Beaton Staff Writer Ibeaton@plumasnews.com Ambitious Feather River College students gave presen- tations to classmates and fac- ulty Dec. 7 as the final exam for their internship course, Business 171. Students were paired with community members who have expertise in a variety of careers. Over the course of the fall semester, students were required to work at least 50 hours with their mentors in addition to at- tending classes and complet- ing coursework. In an opening address, In- terim FRC President Kevin Trutna told students that this valuable program is prepar- ing them for a career of their choice. Trutna said that even if an internship wasn't in the field that a student ultimately worked in, the skills learned during the internship would transfer across all careers and aid students in their fu- ture jobs. Rajinder Gill, intern pro- gram mentor and director, told the audience that "21st- century skills," previously known as "soft skills," which interns learned in this course, would help them in their careers. They learned cultural awareness and personal skills along with the techni- cal and practical aspects of whichever career field their internship was in. Approximately 30 students took advantage of the intern- ship program to earn college credit while getting on-the- job skills with career ex- perts. Internship projects ranged within the fields of aquapon- ics, astronomy, agriculture, nursing, math, event plan- ning, website design, art, so- cial work, livestock care, nonprofit business skills, grant writing and more. Many students are already looking forward to their next internship after the winter break. For more information or to enroll in the internship class, contact Gill at rgill@frc.edu. Rajinder Gill, internship 'mentor and program director, addresses the interns and audience Dec. 7 at FRC's gallery classroom. Gill emceed the 90-minute program, where interns presented their projects, learning valuable public speaking skills in the process.
