No stranger to the rules and regulations surrounding health care, or the financial struggle California hospitals are experiencing, Hathaway began his official duties Dec. 12 at PDIi. Hathaway replaces Michael Barry, who announced his re- tirement plans several months ago. Barry, however, agreed to continue at PDH, giving the board of directors time to interview for the posi- tion. Barry's final day was Dec. 11. Hathaway "I think it's a tremendous place," Hathaway said, just days after assuming control of the small rural facility. Although ttathaway is ex- cited about the possibilities of running PDH, he didn't take this move lightly. Prior to applying, Hath- away said he developed his own marketing plan while in Lake County. It was impor- tant to know where he wanted to be in both his needs and ex- pectations, personally and professionally. When ttathaway arrived in Quincy, he said there was something about tile commu- nity that reminded him of where he grew up ill Oregon. His wife, Bey, agreed it was a move she wanted to make. Hathaway's move to PDH meant leaving tile Adventist Health Redbud Community Hospital in Clearlake, where he served as administrator. The rural. 40-bed acute care facility also had five rural health clinics serving Lake County. Hathaway was also the vice president of St. Helena Hospi- tal. tte was tile execL~ive for the home health agency and handled all hospital relation- ships between Napa and Lake counties for a 190-bed acute care hospital and cardiac re- ferral center. His goals included: Creating an effective plan to return the hospital to a prof- itable status. The facility is on track toward its goal. He also helped save the hos- pital $600,000 by creating a strong physician recruitment program. By hiring five key physicians, the facility was able to eliminate costly hospi- tal call arrangements. He developed a productivity plan that saved $400,000 by aligning labor expenses with actual volume. He reduced management ex- penses by $200,000 by creating dual roles for department managers at Redbud and St. Helena hospitals. 0 When If COmes to alcohol, it'S easy to be fooled by appearances. But the fact is, that an "innocent" 12 oz. mug of beer or a "harmless" 5 oz. glass of wine, is as guilty of causing intoxication as a standard 1 t/4 oz, shot of hard liquor. And, no matter what you're drinking, one drink per hour sets the pace for responsible moderation. Eating foods that aie rich in pro- tein beforehand, is another way to temper the effects of alcohol. But perhaps the most sobering fact of all, is that you really don't have to drink to have a great time. This holiday season, be merry but wise. Use good judgement. Don't drink and drive. Hathaway was also involved in plans %r an emergency de- partment that tripled in size and created private treatment rooms with an approved bud- get of $2.9 million. He created a master planning process that allowed for the growth and renovation of the facilities, including a new front entrance, physician of- fice building and department relocations. A planned upgrade for me- chanical systems of the hospi- tal was done with an ap- proved budget of $2.2 million. He also developed a close liai- son with the school district by providing health care to med- ically underserved students. Hathaway was also instru- mental in in:proving the im- age of tt:e hospital in tile con> munity through his involve- ment in city and county events, local memberships. and speaking at community opportunities. Hathaway worked at Clear- lake and St. ttelena's from 1999-2000. Prior to his move to Califor- nia, Hatha~ay worked his way tip tile ladder from 1982- 19q8 at Florida Hospital in Or- lando.
